The spelling of the middle name varies between Barris and Barras; the original William's middle name was recorded as Barris on both his birth and death certificates but as Barras on his marriage certificate. His son William Barras Downie was awarded the British Empire Medal in Queen Elizabeth II's first Birthday Honours List in June 1952.
It seems likely that the birthplace of both Thomas Gilchrist and Martha Allan was Chapelton, Glassford, Lanarkshire - the birthplace of Chryston comes from the LDS transcription of the 1881 Census.
