The marriage of James Black and Matty (Mattie) Downie was recorded on the same date in both Edinburgh North Parish and Kinghorn, the Edinburgh entry describing the bride as the daughter of David Downie, labourer at Auchterderran. The birth entries of the two known sons name the father as James Blackwood and the mother as Magdalene/Magdalen/Magdalin Downie. David's baptism is recorded in both Auchterderran and Ballingry - his birthplace is given as Ballingry in the 1851 Census.
