James Spence and Mary Chalmers had quadruplets on 30 January 1845 - an unusual occurrence in those days. The children were baptized in the Anstruther Free Kirk but only one, James Black Spence, survived beyond the age of 1. The evidence for James's death date comes from a newspaper cutting about his parents' Golden Wedding - he appears not to have died in Scotland.
