Neil Craig was not with his family in the 1841 Census, when Mary was in Dailly with five of her six children, missing Cathrine (who was still alive in 1863 as she was the informant on her mother's death certificate, presumably still unmarried). Catherine was probably a female servant in the household of Alexander Blair, surgeon in Dailly. Neil's parentage is unknown and his birth and death have not so far been found. In the 1851 Census, Mary is listed as a Widow aged 57, Pauper (Washerwoman) born Maybole, with her daughter Janet and a grandson Neil McWhirter.
