Thee is no certainty that James was the son of David and Catherine. None of the birth records has been found and the only information about James's death comes from the death certificate of his widow, Elizabeth Thomson, who died on 14 March 1855. The certificate shows that she had nine children by James, the last aged 26 at the time of her death, and then one child by her second husband John Smith, aged 24 in 1855.
