The family gravestone in Stenton gives the place of death of James Dods as "Calafornia", aged 77. The only possible death in the California Death Index is that of James S. Dodds, who died aged 78 on 19 October 1918 in San Francisco County. The Census entries for this James Dodds show that he was a Machinist born in Scotland (in April 1840 according to the 1900 US Federal Census), but his approximate birthdate of 1842 for James Dods comes from his entries in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 Censuses in Scotland, when he was with his parents. The fact that he cannot be found in Scotland in the 1881 Census is consistent with the 1900 Census which gives an immigration date of 1881.
