There are some uncertainties here, particularly on the maternal side since there is no direct evidence that the Helen Hird born in St Andrews and St Leonards was the Helen Hird, spouse of John Downie. The evidence for John's parentage is stronger as he was baptized the son of Daniel Downie and Margaret Kinsman, and Daniel Downie was a witness at th baptism of John's son David.
