John Downie's wife Helen's was first registered under the name Helen Muir and with no father's name on the certificate. An action in the Sheriff Court of Lanarkshire by her mother resulted in a judgement a week after the birth naming Robert Dickson, Smith in New Trows, Lemsahagow, as the father and authorising his name to be added to Helen's birth certificate. Her surname was not altered but she appeared in the 1871 Census in Edinburgh es as Helen M. Dickson. The name of her father was given as William Dickson on her marriage certificate.
