Ann Fraser or Frazer's birthdate and birthplace come from the 1851 Census; she may be the daughter of John Frazer and Anne Watt born 26 November, baptized 4 December 1803 at Inveresk with Musselburgh. Though her husband John's death certificate in 1855 says "married to Ann Fraser" and her son William's death certificate in 1867 does not have "deceased" against her name, no trace has so far been found of her death in Scottish Statutory Death records. In the 1881 Census, Marion McNaughton M.S. Downie was living with her uncle William Fraser aged 69 born Newton, Midlothian, and his death certificate gives his parents as John Fraser and Marion Hogg. John Frazer and Marion Hogg who married at Inveresk and Musselburgh on 23 December 1799 had four children born in Inveresk and Musselburgh, and William, born 25 October 1812, was the first of five further children born in Newton. Among the Inveresk and Musselburgh births was that of Agness Frazer on 23 February 1804. Significantly (or not), Marion Downie aged 16 was living with Agnes Downie aged 68 in the 1871 Census. No trace has so far been found in Scotland of the death of Ann (or Agnes).

John's death certificate is from the very informative year of 1855, and it lists the names of his children, with ages for the living children. All the above children are listed on the death certificate with the exception of both sons called James, the first of whom is the only one whose birth and baptism has been found in parish records - son of John Downie and Ann Frazer, who are given as the parents on the death certificates of David and Marion (born 1844). The family was at Gogar Stone in the 1841 and 1851 Censuses and the assumption has been made that the John Downie who died aged 5 on 19 December 1837 there was the same person as the James Downie born there in 1832. The Kirkliston Entry in the 1845 Statistical Account of Scotland notes that the Parish Church is distant from the southern part of the parish and the lack of a convenient bridge over the River Almond makes the journey even longer. Indeed, it seems that John Downie may have attended Currie Kirk rather than Kirkliston Parish Church as he was married in Currie and the only baptism and death records found have been in the Currie Parish Register.
