William's marriage record in 1911 gives his bride's surname as Stenhouse. Her parents are named in the record as Peter Stenhouse and Christina Weatherstone but she is almost certainly the illegitimate daughter of Helen Mitchell, born 5 June 1889 Newington. She has not been found in the 1891 Census but appears as Violet Stenhouse, daughter of Peter and Christina, in the 1901 Census. Her death certificate, signed by her son George Cairns Downie, gives no father's name and a mother's name of Violet Mitchell, deceased.
