After the death of Marion McNeill, William Downie appears to have left his two daughters with their maternal grandparents at Blinkbonny, Currie, where the younger daughter Helen Lawson Downie died in 1883. He was in Flint, North Wales, at the time of the 1881 Census, when his daughters were in Currie with their grandparents. The elder daughter Marion Wilson Downie married James Arnot on 1 June 1906 in Currie.
William moved to England, where he married Fanny Walker, by whom he had three more children.
