All the sons of James Downie and Margaret Mossman with the exception of Thomas, who may have been disabled and who died in Currie in 1868 from a spinal complaint, emigrated to the United States. James's death certificate in 1875, informant his son in law James Nivison, does not identify his parents but there is a baptism record in 1806 in Curriefor James Downie, son of David Downie and Marion Carr. Further proof has come to light through Y-DNA testing. In late 2023, Bryan Downie, a direct descendant of James Downie, took a Y-DNA 37 marker test which proved to be an exact match with the 37 marker results for Ian Downie, a direct descendant of George Downie. This result goes a very long way towards providing that George and James were brothers, and sons of David Downie and Mary Kerr, in the absence of direct, documentary proof.
